International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) First District (Canada) International Vice President Russ Shewchuk released the following statement in response to the Federal Government’s announcement on targeted countermeasures and substantive support for workers and businesses in response to U.S. tariffs.
“The IBEW First District supports the federal government’s response to the latest U.S. tariffs and its commitment to protect Canadian workers.
“These tariffs threaten jobs in sectors where thousands of IBEW members earn their living, including steel, mining, pulp and paper, manufacturing and other resource industries.
“We support the government’s decision to respond to U.S. tariffs while providing direct assistance to workers and businesses in the hardest-hit sectors. That assistance needs to reach affected workers quickly and help keep Canadians working.
“During this contentious time, the IBEW will continue to stand with our members, defend good-paying Canadian jobs and work with government to protect the industries and communities that depend on them. Canadian workers should not be left to pay the price for an unfair trade dispute.”
