{"id":1002093,"date":"2018-05-04T12:19:14","date_gmt":"2018-05-04T12:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ibewcanada.ca\/?p=1002093"},"modified":"2018-05-03T12:22:32","modified_gmt":"2018-05-03T12:22:32","slug":"faster-internet-for-rural-areas-of-coastal-british-columbia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibewcanada.ca\/fr\/news\/faster-internet-for-rural-areas-of-coastal-british-columbia\/","title":{"rendered":"Faster Internet for Rural Areas Of Coastal British Columbia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Through a combined investment of $45.4 million, the Government of Canada, in partnership with the Government of British Columbia, is bringing new and improved high-speed internet<br \/>\nto 154 rural and remote communities, enabling residents to get online.<\/p>\n<p>Local 213 signatory CityWest Cable and Telephone will receive a total of $12.4 million \u2014 $9.3 million from the federal government and $3.1 million from the Government of British Columbia \u2014 to<br \/>\nimprove high-speed internet service for 23 communities and 97 institutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is very exciting news for our employees and shows the faith that the provincial and federal governments have in us\u201d said CityWest CEO Chris Marett. \u201cProjects like this secure the future for our highly skilled IBEW Local 213 members working for City- West,\u201d said Robin Nedila, Local 213 assistant business manager representing members in cable and telecommunications. \u201cOur telecommunications training department, NETCOM, offers the very best fiber optic training in the industry and we\u2019re confident that our members will succeed in northern B.C.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This investment will help residents of these communities connect with family and friends, do business online, participate in distance education and take advantage of the opportunities afforded by<br \/>\nthe digital age. It will also help connect schools, hospitals, libraries and businesses to networks that are essential to their services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigh-speed internet service is a basic tool that all Canadians should have access to, regardless of their postal code, said Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development. \u201cThanks to our Connect to Innovate program, more Canadians will be able to participate fully in the digital economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This investment includes new subsea fibre optic cable that will connect communities between Prince Rupert and Vancouver, as well as around Vancouver Island \u2014 a total of 3.5 million metres of cable.
